Islamabad(The COW News DigitaL)Three years after the events of May 9, 2023, a comprehensive police report has been released detailing the progress of investigations, arrests, and court proceedings related to the widespread cases registered across Punjab.

According to the report, a total of 319 cases were registered in the province in connection with the incidents. Authorities have named 35,962 individuals as accused, while 11,367 have been arrested so far during the course of investigations.

The report further states that challans have been submitted in 307 of the 319 cases, while 12 remain pending. A significant number of suspects—24,595 individuals—have been placed in the category of unidentified accused, according to police records.

Law enforcement officials have maintained that the leadership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, including the party’s founding chairman and central leadership, has been named in all major cases linked to the events. The report also claims that the broader party leadership has been included among the accused in multiple cases.

So far, verdicts have been announced in 22 cases related to the May 9 incidents. The report notes that in one of the cases, Shah Mahmood Qureshi has been acquitted, while proceedings continue in several others.

In Rawalpindi district alone, 12 cases remain pending. Key cases involving the General Headquarters (GHQ) Gate One and GHQ Gate Four are still under trial. The report highlights that the GHQ Gate One case includes 119 accused persons, with statements recorded for 44 individuals, while cross-examination has yet to begin.

Additionally, in 11 cases from the Rawalpindi district, charges have not yet been formally framed, indicating delays in procedural progress. All cases are being tried under video-link and jail trial arrangements as per official notifications.

Military courts have also played a role in the proceedings. According to the report, 32 individuals, including Hassan Niazi, have been sentenced to 10 years in prison in certain cases. In total, 10 cases have been tried in military courts, resulting in multiple convictions.

Several political figures, including Dr. Yasmin Rashid, former governor Sarfraz Cheema, Ejaz Chaudhry, and Mahmood Rasheed, have each been handed 10-year prison sentences. Other leaders, including Allama Hamid Raza, Sheikh Waqas, Zartaj Gul, and Omar Ayub, have also reportedly received similar sentences.

It is worth noting that the Chief Justice of Pakistan had earlier directed that all May 9-related cases be decided within four months, emphasizing the need for expedited legal proceedings.

The report reflects both the scale of the legal actions taken over the past three years and the continued judicial delays in several high-profile cases.
