Pakistan Clears India Match in T20 World Cup After ICC Appeal

Islamabad(The COW News Digital)The Government of Pakistan has officially granted permission for the national cricket team to play against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, reversing its earlier position following appeals from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and several friendly cricketing nations.

According to an official statement, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was briefed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on the outcome of high-level consultations involving the ICC, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and representatives from other member countries. After reviewing the diplomatic correspondence and requests, the government directed the national team to participate in the scheduled match against India on February 15, 2026.

The decision came after formal appeals from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other cricket boards, urging Pakistan to reconsider its stance in the broader interest of the game. The government acknowledged these requests and emphasized that the final decision was taken to uphold the spirit of cricket, ensure continuity of the global tournament, and respect international sporting commitments.

In its statement, the Government of Pakistan welcomed comments from BCB President Aminul Islam and reiterated Pakistan’s solidarity with Bangladesh. Officials noted that multilateral dialogue played a key role in addressing concerns and finding a workable solution acceptable to all stakeholders.

Separately, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also contacted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, requesting Pakistan’s participation in the high-profile match. He recalled Pakistan’s support for Sri Lankan cricket during difficult times and stressed the importance of maintaining sporting ties. The prime minister appreciated Sri Lanka’s recent decision not to cancel its tour of Pakistan, calling it a gesture that strengthened mutual trust.

The Emirates Cricket Board also reportedly reached out to the PCB, recommending a review of the earlier boycott decision and encouraging Pakistan to act in the best interests of international cricket.

Speaking to the media in Lahore after a Pakistan Super League event, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that Pakistan does not bow to pressure but believes in honoring guests and respecting international norms. He clarified that decisions regarding matches against India are taken by the government, and the PCB fully abides by those directives.

The prime minister and the people of Pakistan extended their best wishes to the “Men in Green,” expressing confidence that the team will compete with professionalism, national pride, and true sportsmanship on the world stage.
