World ( The cow news digital ) Pakistan has officially entered the era of 5G technology as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) issued licenses to three major telecom operators, paving the way for phased rollout of next-generation internet services across the country.
The licenses were granted to Zong, Jazz, and Ufone, enabling them to provide high-speed 5G connectivity to consumers. The step marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s digital transformation and is expected to revolutionize internet access, digital services, and business operations nationwide.
At the license issuance ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the importance of 5G in promoting industry, agriculture, and the IT sector. He praised the transparent auction process for the 5G spectrum and commended the teams involved for overcoming legal and logistical challenges. The Prime Minister also underscored the role of modern technology in enhancing Pakistan-China cooperation and bridging the digital divide across the country.
Federal Minister for IT, Shaza Fatima, emphasized that the program has been streamlined considering current circumstances, and that this marks Pakistan’s first 5G rollout. She added that ongoing efforts are also focused on improving existing 4G services, ensuring a higher-quality internet experience for citizens in the coming months.
PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez ur Rehman traced the evolution of mobile technology in Pakistan from the early 1990s, noting that four spectrum auctions took place between 2004 and 2025. He stated that the 480 MHz 5G spectrum was auctioned transparently, positioning Pakistan among the leading countries in the region in terms of spectrum capacity.
The rollout will initially cover major cities including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Quetta, and Peshawar. Telecom companies are also coordinating with mobile manufacturers to ensure that users receive software updates enabling 5G access on their devices.
