ISLAMABAD(The COW News Digital) Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has announced that a formal debate on the creation of new provinces in Pakistan will be held in Parliament in October.
Speaking to the media, the federal minister said Parliament was the appropriate forum for discussing the long-standing issue of creating new administrative units in the country.
Chaudhry said sessions of both the National Assembly and the Senate are scheduled to take place in October, providing an opportunity for lawmakers to debate the proposal for new provinces.
“The proper forum for the debate on new provinces is Parliament,” the minister said, emphasizing the role of elected representatives in discussing matters related to the country’s administrative and political structure.
The announcement comes amid renewed political discussion over the possibility of creating additional provinces in Pakistan. The issue has remained a subject of debate among political parties and regional stakeholders for years, with supporters arguing that smaller administrative units could improve governance and public service delivery.
The federal minister also revealed that Islamabad is preparing to adopt a new governance model. However, he did not provide further details about the proposed model or explain when it would be formally introduced.
The announcement follows a recent call by Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for the issue of provinces to be discussed on the floor of the National Assembly rather than through business forums.
Speaking to the media in London, Bilawal said his party had a clear position on the provinces issue and stressed that any discussion about changes to the existing system should take place through Parliament.
He argued that if the current system had failed to address key challenges, the matter should be subjected to a proper debate in the National Assembly. Bilawal also maintained that Pakistan’s problems could ultimately be addressed through democratic institutions and processes.
The planned parliamentary discussions in October could therefore provide a significant platform for political parties to present their positions on the creation of new provinces and possible changes to the country’s governance structure.
The debate is expected to attract attention from political parties, provincial representatives and other stakeholders as Parliament considers the administrative and constitutional implications of any proposed changes.
