Islamabad( The COW News Digital)Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has convened a federal cabinet meeting today at 10:00 AM to discuss the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Sources confirm that the Prime Minister will preside over the session via video link from Baku.

According to officials, the government has accepted proposals from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) regarding the amendment. The cabinet is expected to approve the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment during the session.

The opposition, however, has already rejected the draft. Following a meeting of Senate opposition parties, a joint statement accused the ruling coalition—comprising the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), PPP, and allied parties—of bulldozing the legislative process. They also alleged that the draft amendment is being kept from the opposition.

Earlier, PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari briefed the media after a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting. He said that the committee reached consensus on three points related to the constitutional amendment.

Bilawal stated that PPP would support changes to Article 243, which deals with the armed forces, and emphasized the importance of establishing constitutional courts. He also highlighted the need to address other issues under the Charter of Democracy.

Regarding provincial finances, Bilawal noted that under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award, provinces’ shares can increase but will not be reduced. He stressed that discussions on the incomplete agenda of the Charter of Democracy should continue, and that the 27th Amendment process should aim for broader consensus on other clauses.

Political analysts suggest that today’s cabinet meeting could mark a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s constitutional reform process. Approval of the 27th Amendment may strengthen the federal-provincial financial balance while formalizing measures related to the armed forces and judicial reforms.

The amendment has been a point of contention, with ruling and opposition parties negotiating over key provisions. PPP’s partial support indicates potential for compromise, but opposition resistance highlights the challenge of achieving a consensus on issues of national importance.

As the cabinet convenes, all eyes are on whether the government will secure approval for the amendment and how the process will impact federal-province relations and Pakistan’s political landscape in the coming months.
