PESHAWAR(The COW News Digital) A close relative of retired Pakistan Navy Commander Amir Handal, who died along with several family members in the Saifullah Lake boating tragedy, has called for a comprehensive investigation, alleging possible foul play alongside claims of official negligence.
Speaking to the media, Naveed Cheema, the deceased officer’s brother-in-law, questioned the safety measures at the tourist destination and urged authorities to examine all aspects of the incident. He said warning systems, emergency protocols, and basic safety arrangements were either inadequate or absent despite reports of dangerous water conditions.
Cheema criticized the authorities for failing to alert visitors about the risks at the lake. He said popular tourist destinations around the world provide clear safety instructions and emergency guidance, while no such precautions were reportedly in place before the boating incident.
He further claimed that no life jackets were provided and questioned the pace and effectiveness of the rescue operation. According to Cheema, the rescue response was hampered by logistical failures, including allegations that an ambulance transporting victims ran out of fuel. He also claimed that medical staff were not immediately available when the victims reached the hospital, raising concerns about the emergency response.
Cheema urged both provincial governments and law enforcement agencies to conduct an impartial inquiry into the tragedy. He said investigators should also examine whether an ongoing family property dispute involving the deceased could have any connection to the incident, alleging that Commander Handal had previously received threats.
He further alleged that the deceased officer’s nephew had illegally occupied his farmhouse and claimed that the property had been misused. According to Cheema, Commander Handal had previously submitted a request to senior police officials seeking action over the alleged occupation.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and no official statement has been issued by police or other authorities regarding the claims of foul play or the reported property dispute.
The tragic boating accident occurred on July 1 at Saifullah Lake in the Mahodand area, where Commander Handal and his family were traveling when their boat capsized. Six members of the family lost their lives, including the retired naval officer, his son Abdullah Handal, daughters Parwa Handal and Rovail Handal, and Parwa’s two young children.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
