National ( The cow news digital ) Dera Ghazi Khan, April 24, 2026 — Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has stated that the time has come to firmly defend the Constitution of Pakistan, the 18th Constitutional Amendment, and provincial autonomy, amid growing political and constitutional debate in the country.

Speaking to media representatives after offering condolences to the family of former Punjab Governor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Maulana Fazlur Rehman reiterated his party’s commitment to protecting constitutional provisions and the rights of provinces. He said that any attempt to weaken the 18th Amendment or reduce provincial autonomy would be strongly resisted.

The JUI-F leader remarked that inflation and power outages remain pressing issues, and although protests against these concerns have been postponed, they have not been cancelled. He emphasized that the struggle for constitutional rights and provincial autonomy will continue with renewed focus.

Criticizing the functioning of democratic institutions, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that while the Constitution is frequently referenced, Parliament is being reduced to a rubber stamp. He expressed concern over the weakening of legislative authority and decision-making processes.

He described the 18th Amendment and the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award as fundamental rights of the provinces, warning that any attempts to alter these arrangements would be unacceptable. He further cautioned that discussions about dividing provinces have also emerged in certain political circles, which he termed alarming and inappropriate.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman also clarified that law and order is a provincial responsibility under the Constitution. However, he acknowledged that provinces can seek assistance from the federal government when required, in accordance with constitutional provisions. He stressed that using such matters as a justification for constitutional amendments amounts to political pressure and blackmail.

The JUI-F chief concluded by reaffirming that his party will continue to stand for constitutional supremacy, democratic values, and the protection of provincial rights in accordance with the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan.
