RIYADH(The COW News Digital)In a demonstration of faith and unity amid a period of drought, Saudi Arabia witnessed the performance of Istisqa prayers across all its regions yesterday, seeking divine mercy for rainfall. The spiritual event was held in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who prescribed this special prayer during times of prolonged dry spells.
Saudi media reports indicate that, under the guidance of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, citizens gathered in mosques and designated open areas across cities, towns, and villages to participate in the ritual. The event was also encouraged by the Grand Mufti, who urged people nationwide to pray collectively for rainfall and seek forgiveness from Allah.
Istisqa is a unique Islamic prayer consisting of two units (rak‘ahs), during which worshippers ask for divine pardon and supplicate for rain. Typically, the prayer is accompanied by a sermon, in which the Imam emphasizes the spiritual and communal significance of seeking Allah’s mercy during times of scarcity.
The prayers in Saudi Arabia come as part of a wider regional response to worsening drought conditions. In neighboring countries such as Syria and Qatar, authorities also organized Istisqa prayers in response to record-low rainfall levels.
In Syria, the Ministry of Awqaf announced that Istisqa prayers would be observed nationwide today. Citizens were encouraged to fast for three days prior to the prayer, return any unjustly taken rights, and participate with sincere repentance and collective supplication.
In Qatar, following the appeal of Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, thousands of worshippers gathered for Istisqa prayers at the Lusail Mosque in Doha. The Emir led the congregation, demonstrating the importance of faith-driven initiatives to cope with climatic challenges.
Religious scholars note that Istisqa is not only a prayer for rain but also an opportunity for the community to seek spiritual renewal, repentance, and unity. The practice reflects a deep-rooted belief in divine providence, especially in regions facing climatic unpredictability and agricultural stress.
As Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern nations confront the ongoing drought, these prayers symbolize both hope and collective resilience. Authorities continue to encourage citizens to maintain faith, take preventive measures for water conservation, and engage in social solidarity while relying on spiritual guidance.
