Washington( The COW News Digital) In a dramatic shift that has already stirred debate both at home and abroad, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order officially renaming the Department of Defense as the “Department of War.”

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump declared that it was time to “call things by their real name.” He said the rebranding sends a clear and powerful message to the world that America is prepared for any challenge.

“This is not just a symbolic change,” Trump said. “The Department of War reflects America’s readiness and strength. At a time of global uncertainty, we want our enemies and allies alike to understand our position.”

Joining Trump at the announcement was Pete Hegseth, the current Pentagon chief, who will now formally hold the title of “Secretary of War.”

Trump noted that the department was originally known as the Department of War during World War I and World War II, before being renamed the Department of Defense in 1949. “We’re simply returning to history,” he added.

On international matters, Trump addressed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, saying his administration is actively working on a possible agreement but acknowledged the complexity of the situation. “We’ve stopped seven wars, but halting the Russia-Ukraine conflict is more difficult. Still, we are engaged and pushing for a resolution,” he stated. He added that the U.S. is considering providing Ukraine with security guarantees but cited “attitudinal obstacles” in negotiations.

Turning to the Middle East, Trump revealed that Washington is engaged in “serious talks” with Hamas over a potential ceasefire in Gaza. He said Hamas is holding around 20 Israeli hostages, and unverified reports suggest some may have been killed. “We hope those reports are wrong,” Trump said, warning that if Hamas fails to release the captives, the U.S. will take “tough measures.”

On India, Trump expressed disappointment over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. He confirmed that his administration has doubled tariffs on Indian imports, raising them to 50 percent as a punitive measure. “India’s reliance on Russian oil is frustrating, and we are responding strongly,” he said.

The decision to rename the Pentagon has already sparked fierce debate in Washington and beyond. While Trump’s supporters hail it as a bold assertion of American strength, critics warn it may escalate global tensions at a fragile time for world peace.
