GENEVA( The COW News Digital) The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), backed by Pakistan and several other nations, has demanded strict accountability for Israel following its recent airstrikes on Qatar, calling the attack a violation of international law and a threat to regional stability.
According to Reuters, Israeli fighter jets targeted locations in Doha on September 9, reportedly where senior Hamas leaders were meeting to discuss a U.S.-proposed ceasefire plan for Gaza. The strike killed five Hamas leaders and one Qatari security official, sparking global outrage.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the airstrikes, calling them a “grave breach of international law” and stressing that unlawful killings must not go unpunished. He urged the international community to ensure justice and prevent further escalation in the region.
Qatari Minister Maryam Al-Misnad described the attack as “treacherous” and urged world powers to take concrete action to hold Israel accountable. Pakistan’s Ambassador Bilal Ahmad warned that such aggression could dangerously destabilize the region if left unchecked.
Notably, neither Israel nor the United States attended the UNHRC session. Israel’s ambassador in Geneva dismissed the discussion, claiming the council was being used for “anti-Israel propaganda” and accused it of consistently targeting Israel unfairly.
The European Union, China, and South Africa also joined in condemning the strike, voicing strong support for Qatar’s sovereignty and regional peace efforts. South Africa’s representative emphasized that the time had come for the international community to end Israel’s “impunity” and ensure that it is held accountable for violations.
Observers say this development could increase diplomatic pressure on Israel as global calls for accountability grow louder. Analysts note that the strong international reaction underscores rising concerns over the spillover effects of the Gaza conflict into neighboring countries.
The UNHRC resolution is expected to put Israel under further scrutiny at upcoming international forums, though it remains unclear what concrete measures, if any, will follow in response to these calls for accountability.
