Fetal Stem Cell Therapy May Prevent Birth Defects

Islamabad (The Cow News) New research suggests that administering stem cell therapy to unborn children could prevent serious congenital defects, particularly those affecting the spinal cord. The study focused on spina bifida, a condition in which a baby’s spinal column does not fully form during pregnancy, potentially causing lifelong mobility and neurological issues.

The study, conducted in California, involved six pregnant women between 24 and 25 weeks of gestation. All fetuses were diagnosed with myelomeningocele, a severe form of spina bifida, along with hindbrain herniation, a brain abnormality linked to the condition.

During the procedure, surgeons performed fetal surgery to repair the spinal column. As an additional step, stem cells derived from donated placental tissue were applied directly to the affected area of the spine. Researchers hope that this intervention may have lasting benefits for the chil
