Iran has cautioned against any member withdrawing from OPEC, stating that such a move driven by negative reactions would not serve the interests of any party. The remarks were made by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei amid rising regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic strains.
Baghaei said Iran continues bilateral discussions with Oman regarding mechanisms to ensure safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized the importance of establishing formal protocols to guarantee secure shipping routes in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Addressing broader geopolitical issues, the spokesperson criticized the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, accusing him of repeating what Iran considers unfounded allegations against Tehran. Baghaei also accused the United States of engaging in direct sabotage and military aggression during diplomatic engagements, further complicating efforts to de-escalate tensions.
He pointed to the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018 as a clear example of Washington’s lack of commitment to diplomacy. According to Baghaei, the U.S. has continued what he described as interventionist and aggressive behavior even during periods of dialogue.
The spokesperson reiterated that Iran is currently focused solely on ending the ongoing conflict and is not engaged in discussions on other matters. He maintained that recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz are a direct consequence of U.S. actions, adding that the waterway had remained a secure route for global maritime traffic prior to escalating tensions.
Baghaei further claimed that international shipping companies are aware of the need to coordinate with Iran when navigating the strait and insisted that Tehran’s actions are in line with international law. He accused the United States of contributing to insecurity not only in the Strait of Hormuz but also across international waters.
Responding to the possibility of U.S. naval deployments in the region, Baghaei warned that Iran’s armed forces are fully prepared to counter any perceived threats. He stressed, however, that Iran remains committed to pursuing an end to hostilities.
He also revealed that the United States has responded, via Pakistan, to a 14-point proposal presented by Iran aimed at ending the conflict. The plan is currently under review in Tehran and is said to focus on de-escalation and the establishment of sustainable peace.
Baghaei concluded by noting that there are currently no active nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, although diplomatic contacts continue through indirect channels.
