Washington, DC (The COW News Digital)U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin desires to end the ongoing war in Ukraine, despite recent high-level talks in Moscow failing to yield any concrete results.

Trump, along with U.S. Ambassador Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, held extensive discussions with Putin at the Kremlin. While the talks were described as “very good” overall by Trump, no immediate resolution emerged to halt what has become the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II.

According to Kremlin officials, portions of the U.S.-proposed peace plan were deemed unacceptable, even though it included an offer for Ukraine to cede certain territories in eastern Donbas—currently under Ukrainian control—to Russia. Moscow has stressed that it remains open to diplomatic solutions but is prepared to continue military operations if Ukraine refuses territorial concessions.

Trump emphasized that both parties’ consent is essential for any agreement, and highlighted that “Putin has expressed a desire for peace.” He also stated that Ukraine has accepted most aspects of the U.S. peace proposal, signaling potential progress in the long-standing conflict.

International media reports indicate that Witkoff and Kushner will meet with Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umurov, in Florida to discuss the next steps following the Kremlin talks.

Moscow has attributed the lack of immediate progress to recent Russian battlefield successes, which have strengthened its negotiating position. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov remarked, “Recent victories by Russian forces have impacted the negotiating environment.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia. In a recent address, he said, “The world now sees that a window for peace is open, but it must be reinforced with pressure on Russia.” He further emphasized that any lasting peace must fully safeguard Ukraine’s national interests.

In parallel, NATO announced multi-million-dollar arms shipments to Ukraine to bolster its defenses against Russian aggression. NATO officials stated that while dialogue for peace is welcome, Ukraine must remain in a position of strength.

European powers have voiced concerns about a U.S.-Russia deal that could sideline Ukraine and potentially weaken its negotiating stance. European countries have thus sought adjustments to the initial U.S. peace plan to ensure Kyiv’s interests are fully protected.
