Washington(The COW News Digital) U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that no new legislation is required for American forces to be redeployed to Venezuela, amid ongoing tensions following the recent military operation that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Speaking in an interview with U.S. media, Trump clarified that the United States is not at war with Venezuela but is engaged in a campaign against drug traffickers and criminal networks operating from the country.
Trump emphasized that holding immediate elections in Venezuela is not feasible. “The people cannot vote right now. We must first stabilize the country, and that will take time,” he said. According to the President, the U.S. plans to assist in the reconstruction of Venezuela’s energy sector, particularly through investment in oil companies, a process he estimated could take 18 months or less for significant results.
Highlighting America’s long-term strategy, Trump explained that U.S. involvement in Venezuela will be phased and deliberate. “Our role will be sustained and carefully planned,” he said, stressing that military actions are targeted at drug traffickers and those sending prisoners, addicts, and mentally ill individuals into the United States. “We are not in a war with Venezuela; we are fighting narcotics and criminal networks,” Trump added.
The President also revealed that a dedicated team has been formed to oversee operations and developments in Venezuela. The team includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pat Hagel-Sith, and other senior officials tasked with coordinating U.S. policy and strategy in the region.
Analysts note that Trump’s statements suggest a continued U.S. presence and influence in Venezuela’s political and economic reconstruction, highlighting a focus on both security and energy infrastructure. By framing the intervention as a fight against drugs rather than a war with Venezuela, Trump aims to mitigate international criticism while signaling a strong commitment to national security interests.
The remarks come amid growing international scrutiny of U.S. military operations in Venezuela. Observers warn that prolonged American involvement could heighten regional tensions, particularly with neighboring countries and global powers closely monitoring the situation.
Trump’s comments underscore Washington’s intention to maintain pressure on criminal networks while simultaneously shaping Venezuela’s post-operation recovery, reinforcing a strategy that blends security, economic investment, and phased political engagement.
