LONDON(The COW News Digital) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom is deploying four Typhoon fighter jets to Qatar to strengthen regional defense amid rising security concerns in the Gulf. The move comes as tensions escalate following Iran’s recent military activities in the region.
In his statement, Starmer also confirmed that Wildcat helicopters equipped with anti-drone capabilities will soon be stationed in Cyprus. These deployments aim to ensure rapid defensive response capabilities for British forces and safeguard national interests.
Starmer emphasized that the British government prioritizes the protection of its citizens, particularly families of British nationals residing in Gulf countries. “The safety and security of our citizens is our foremost concern,” he said. Officials added that, if necessary, the UK will assist in monitoring oil tankers passing through strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.
Historically, the UK has maintained a policy of resolving disputes with Iran through dialogue and diplomacy, avoiding direct involvement in military operations. Starmer reiterated that Britain did not participate in initial strikes against Iran. However, he explained that the situation changed after Iran carried out attacks on other countries in the region, prompting the UK to enhance its defensive posture.
The Prime Minister highlighted that, to protect citizens and national interests, British defense assets were pre-positioned in the Gulf before any regional military escalation. Key equipment and forces were deployed to Cyprus and Qatar in January and February, ensuring readiness for rapid response.
