Washington (The COW News Digital) The United States has described the dismantling of Hezbollah’s underground tunnel network as a significant step toward strengthening Lebanon’s stability and enhancing broader regional security.
According to international media reports, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the removal of tunnels allegedly used by non-state armed groups to store ammunition, missiles, and explosive-laden drones would contribute to long-term peace efforts in Lebanon. He emphasized that such actions reduce security threats not only within Lebanon but across the wider Middle East.
Admiral Cooper noted that the tunnel networks had reportedly been utilized for the storage and movement of advanced weaponry, posing potential risks to civilian populations and neighboring states. Eliminating these underground facilities, he said, is essential to limiting the operational capacity of armed groups operating outside state control.
The CENTCOM chief also praised the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) for their professionalism and coordination in ongoing security operations. He described the recent developments as evidence of the Lebanese military’s commitment to maintaining national sovereignty and ensuring internal stability during a period of heightened regional tension.
In his remarks, Cooper acknowledged the role of a U.S.-led technical and mechanical support team assisting with the implementation of agreements between Israel and Lebanon. While he did not elaborate on specific operational details, he underscored that international cooperation remains crucial in addressing cross-border security concerns and preventing escalation.
Security analysts say the issue of underground infrastructure has long been a point of contention between Israel and Hezbollah, particularly in border regions where tensions have periodically flared.
