Lahore ( The COW News Digital) Southern Punjab is reeling from devastating floods after India released large volumes of water into the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers, causing widespread destruction across several districts. Dozens of villages have been submerged, embankments breached, and thousands of families displaced as the floodwaters surged beyond safe levels.

At Ganda Singh Wala, the Sutlej River has taken on a catastrophic form, with the water flow recorded at a staggering 327,000 cusecs. The situation has worsened at the Sulemanki and Islam headworks, where high flood levels were also observed. Authorities confirmed that the overflow has inundated multiple areas in Bahawalpur district, particularly four tehsils, where canals and nearby villages have been submerged.

The Ravi River, too, is witnessing alarming conditions. At Head Sidhnai, an exceptionally high flood has been reported, while at Head Balloki, water inflow has surpassed 138,760 cusecs. Similarly, the Chenab River continues to rise dangerously at Khanki, Qadirabad, and near Chiniot, putting surrounding settlements at severe risk.

In Multan, floodwaters have overpowered canals and protective structures. At Qasim Bela, water entering the Shujaabad Canal reached nearly three times its original capacity, forcing the canal to overflow into adjoining areas. The Sher Shah embankment has also breached, submerging multiple localities and leaving residents with little to no time to evacuate.

The Sikandari drain has become a new source of concern for urban populations, as rising water levels threaten residential neighborhoods. At Akbar flood embankment, continuous water pressure has resulted in floodwaters entering Akbar Pur, Basti Kotwal, and nearby villages, further worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Rescue teams and district administrations are actively engaged in relief operations. However, officials admit that the severity of the floods has made it increasingly difficult to reach many stranded families. Boats and heavy machinery are being used where possible, but strong currents are hampering efforts.

Authorities are warning of further flooding if water levels continue to rise, urging residents of low-lying areas to evacuate immediately. With the scale of the disaster unfolding rapidly, the situation in Punjab remains highly precarious. Relief agencies are calling for urgent resources to assist displaced families, provide food, and secure shelter for those affected.
