WASHINGTON, D.C(The COW News Digital) The United States is grappling with one of the most severe winter storms in years, as blizzards and extreme cold sweep across multiple states, disrupting daily life and claiming at least seven lives.

According to U.S. media reports, states including Washington, New York, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Jersey are experiencing heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and icy winds. Rural parts of New York have recorded record low temperatures, with some areas dropping to a staggering –49°C.

The storm has caused widespread disruption. Over 16,000 flights have been canceled, and more than 800,000 residents are without electricity. In response to the storm, Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas are expected to see 6 to 10 inches of snow, prompting federal offices to close on Monday and schools in New York City to switch to online classes.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the storm as the most severe winter event the state has faced in years. Speaking at a press briefing, she warned residents about “bone-chilling, dangerous cold” and urged them to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. She highlighted extreme readings in the state, including –34°C in Watertown and –49°C in Copenhagen village, with snowfall forecasts ranging from 8 to 18 inches in various areas.

Meteorological departments have forecast that the blizzard’s impact may continue into the next week, cautioning communities to prepare for hazardous road conditions, power outages, and ongoing travel disruptions.

Officials have emphasized the importance of public safety, urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and communities to check on vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with medical needs. Emergency services are on high alert to respond to accidents, stranded residents, and weather-related incidents.

The storm has also affected transportation infrastructure nationwide. Snow accumulation, icy roads, and high winds have slowed highway traffic, delayed public transportation, and complicated emergency response operations. Authorities have recommended using snow tires and carrying emergency kits for essential travel.

With the blizzard continuing to affect large parts of the country, experts stress that preparation, adherence to safety advisories, and cautious mobility are critical to minimize the human and economic impact of this historic winter event.
