Occupied Jerusalem(The COW News Digital) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced plans to publish the draft of an interim constitution, aiming to broaden public participation in the country’s constitutional process. According to international media reports, the presidential decision invites citizens, civil society organizations, political groups, analysts, and academic experts to provide observations and suggestions on the draft within 60 days of its publication.
A dedicated Coordination and Drafting Committee, formed under the constitution-preparation framework, will collect, organize, and review the feedback. Observations will be categorized into fundamental constitutional principles and technical organizational inputs to ensure that any amendments reflect public interest and national consensus.
The committee will also prepare a detailed report based on the review of all feedback and recommendations, which will then be presented to the President for discussion and approval. Following this process, the final version of the interim constitution will be prepared.
The presidential decree emphasizes that all relevant authorities are required to implement the provisions of this order immediately upon its issuance. The document will also be officially published in the state gazette to ensure transparency and legal recognition.
The constitution-drafting national committee, established under Abbas’ presidential directive, began its work immediately after its formation. The committee dedicated approximately seven months to consultations and review, conducting around 70 sessions with various civil society stakeholders and relevant authorities. These efforts were aimed at ensuring comprehensive public involvement and adherence to constitutional best practices.
Observers note that the move represents a significant step in Palestinian governance, aiming to enhance transparency, public participation, and institutional legitimacy. By publishing the draft for public comment, President Abbas seeks to create an inclusive framework for shaping the nation’s constitutional and legal structure.
This initiative comes amid ongoing regional and international attention on Palestinian governance and legal reform, highlighting efforts to strengthen democratic processes while fostering national consensus.
