First Solar Eclipse of 2026 on February 17; Not Visible in Pakistan

HOUSTON(The COW News Digital) Astronomers have announced that the first solar eclipse of 2026 is set to occur on February 17. However, observers in Pakistan and most parts of Asia will not be able to witness the event, as it will be primarily visible from remote regions of Antarctica.

According to reports by Space.com, the eclipse will occur when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun along its elliptical orbit. Unlike a total solar eclipse, the Moon will not fully cover the Sun, creating a partial eclipse that produces a “ring of fire” effect.

During the peak of the eclipse, the Sun will appear partially obscured, with its edges glowing and creating a striking visual effect. Observers in Antarctica will witness the Sun taking on the appearance of a bright disc surrounded by a fiery halo. The entire event is expected to last approximately two hours, gradually diminishing as the Moon moves away from the Sun’s path.

Astronomers describe the eclipse in several phases. Initially, the Moon will begin moving across the Sun, partially blocking its light. At the midpoint, the dramatic “ring of fire” will be most prominent. Finally, as the Moon continues its orbit, it will move completely away, restoring the Sun to its normal appearance.

Experts have issued warnings about viewing the eclipse directly, emphasizing that looking at the Sun without proper protection can cause serious eye damage. Anyone wishing to observe the event should use certified solar viewing glasses or specialized solar filters to ensure safety.

In addition to the solar eclipse, astronomers noted that a “blood moon” — a reddish-hued full Moon — will occur less than two weeks later, on March 3. This lunar event, the first blood moon of 2026, will be visible across parts of North America, eastern Asia, and Australia, providing another spectacular celestial display.

Skywatchers around the world are encouraged to mark their calendars for both events, while experts stress the importance of observing safety precautions during solar phenomena. These astronomical events provide a unique opportunity to witness the dynamics of the Sun, Moon, and Earth in alignment, offering both scientific insights and a spectacular visual experience.
