ISLAMABAD — The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered the immediate transfer of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital under strict security, directing the formation of a dedicated medical board to assess and oversee his treatment until the next hearing on September 16.
Hearing petitions regarding Khan’s health and visitation rights, a bench comprising Justice Shahid Waheed and Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan expressed serious concern over the former prime minister’s medical reports. Justice Waheed noted that Khan’s vital organs were showing signs of stress, with irregular pulse and cardiac readings, emphasizing that a routine summary was insufficient and ordering the submission of his complete medical records. Justice Afghan questioned whether critical procedures like angiography could be safely conducted within prison premises, prompting officials to confirm that external hospitalization was necessary.
Addressing political friction surrounding the issue, the apex court strictly warned against politicizing the incarcerated leader’s health. The bench instructed PTI leadership and family members to submit affidavits guaranteeing that no media interactions would occur following medical visits. Khan’s counsel assured the court that his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, and personal physician, Dr. Asim Yusuf, along with Dr. Faisal Sultan, would observe protocol. The court directed that PTI bear all medical expenses at the private facility and permitted family visitations once a week.
Additionally, the court summoned Adiala Jail officials for the next hearing, requesting a detailed record of Khan’s convictions, pending trials, and family visits over the past three years to review compliance with prior court directives.
