Karachi Fruit Prices Soar Ahead of Ramadan

3 Min Read

Karachi(The COW News Digital)Fruit prices in Karachi have surged sharply ahead of Ramadan, placing additional financial strain on residents already grappling with rising living costs.

According to market surveys, vendors across the city are selling fruits well above officially notified rates, making it increasingly difficult for families to maintain balanced diets during the holy month. Consumers reported significant price hikes compared to previous weeks, with some fruits nearly doubling in cost.

Bananas, a staple item during Ramadan due to their affordability and nutritional value, have become scarce in several markets. The price of a dozen bananas, which was selling for around Rs100 before the price surge, has now climbed to Rs200. Shopkeepers attribute the increase to supply shortages and rising transportation expenses, while consumers accuse middlemen of exploiting seasonal demand.

Melons and watermelons have also witnessed steep increases, starting at Rs200 per kilogram in many areas. Apples, another commonly consumed fruit during Ramadan, are being sold at prices described by buyers as “out of reach” for low-income households.

Citrus fruits such as kinnow and mosambi are likewise being sold above government-prescribed rates. Despite official price lists issued by local authorities, enforcement appears limited, and retailers continue to charge higher amounts.

Residents expressed concern that the trend mirrors previous years, when food prices traditionally spike ahead of Ramadan due to increased demand. Many shoppers urged authorities to intensify market inspections and ensure implementation of official price controls to protect consumers from profiteering.

Market traders, however, argue that wholesale prices have risen due to reduced supply from farms and increased fuel costs, leaving retailers with little choice but to adjust their rates. They also pointed to transportation challenges and seasonal fluctuations as contributing factors.

With Ramadan just days away, households are recalculating budgets to manage essential grocery purchases. Nutrition experts emphasize that fruits play a vital role in maintaining energy and hydration during fasting hours, making affordability a pressing concern.

As demand continues to grow in the lead-up to the holy month, citizens are calling for stricter oversight to stabilize prices and prevent further burden on families preparing for Ramadan.
