ISLAMABAD: A senior former member of the military establishment active during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has rejected claims that the military warned former Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding alleged drug use.
The clarification follows the resurgence of a viral video clip on social media featuring a former cabinet minister claiming that military officials were aware of Khan’s alleged substance use and had advised him to refrain from it. Responding to the claims, the former senior official stated that no such warning was ever issued, adding that the establishment possessed no reports or evidence to substantiate allegations of drug use against the former prime minister. He clarified that the rumors belonged strictly to political and media speculation.
The development echoes claims made in May 2023 by then-Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel, who alleged that urine samples taken from Khan during custody revealed traces of alcohol and cocaine, while also questioning his mental stability. However, independent medical experts and subsequent official reports contradicted the health minister’s statements, confirming that official medical evaluations showed standard health indicators with no presence of illicit substances. Imran Khan subsequently issued a legal defamation notice to Patel regarding the allegations.
