SYDNEY – Australian media reports indicate that the attackers responsible for the deadly Bondi Beach shooting were loyal to the Islamic State (ISIS), authorities said, following the incident that left 16 people dead and around 40 injured. Investigations revealed that ISIS flags were found in the vehicle used by the assailants during the attack.
According to foreign news agencies, one of the attackers, Naveed Akram, had been under suspicion of connections to ISIS six years ago and was monitored by Australian intelligence agencies. His father, Sajid Akram, and Naveed were identified as the perpetrators of the shooting, which occurred during a Jewish community event at Bondi Beach in Sydney.
The Joint Counter-Terrorism Team has confirmed that both father and son had pledged allegiance to ISIS prior to the attack. Police recovered two ISIS flags from their vehicle, strengthening evidence of the attackers’ extremist affiliations. The attack has prompted national discussions on domestic terrorism and security measures at public gatherings.
During the police operation, Naveed Akram was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision. His father, Sajid Akram, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that the immediate threat was neutralized, and no further suspects remain at large.
The shooting unfolded quickly, causing panic and chaos among civilians on the beach. Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror as the attackers opened fire on the crowd. Emergency services arrived promptly, providing medical aid and transporting the wounded to nearby hospitals.
New South Wales police held a press conference detailing the sequence of events, emphasizing that the attack was a deliberate act of terrorism. Officials highlighted the importance of vigilance, intelligence coordination, and public awareness in preventing such incidents in the future.
The attack at Bondi Beach has shocked Australia and drawn international attention due to its scale and the assailants’ extremist connections. Security experts note that lone actors or small familial cells with radical ideologies can pose serious threats, even in countries with stringent counter-terrorism measures.
Authorities continue to investigate the attackers’ backgrounds, networks, and possible motives, while emphasizing community safety and the need for enhanced preventive strategies. Public officials have also called for solidarity with victims and support for affected families during this period of mourning.
