A prominent human rights organization has called for the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and demanded compensation for his alleged unlawful detention. The group also highlighted what it described as a broader campaign of political repression targeting Khan and members of his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to the statement, numerous PTI leaders and activists have faced arrests and legal pressures in recent months, raising concerns about the state of political freedoms in the country. The organization urged authorities to respect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, emphasizing that political dissent should not be criminalized.
The human rights body also urged the government to investigate the reported arrests and ensure that any actions against political figures adhere strictly to constitutional and legal frameworks. It stressed that arbitrary detention and harassment of opposition members undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.
Analysts note that the ongoing tension between the government and PTI has intensified political polarization, with repeated confrontations over legal and administrative measures. International observers have called on all parties to engage in dialogue and uphold democratic norms, warning that continued repression could further destabilize the political climate.
The organization reiterated that the release of Khan and protection of political rights are essential steps toward restoring democratic processes and safeguarding the rule of law in Pakistan.
