China (The COW News Digital)China is set to invest $37 million in donkey farming in Pakistan, a move aimed at transforming the country into a major supplier in the global donkey-related products market.
According to the Ministry of National Food Security, Chinese company Sang Yang Global (Pvt) Ltd will spearhead the investment and develop large-scale donkey breeding infrastructure. The project will focus on scientific breeding methods to improve livestock quality and ensure sustainable production.
As part of the initiative, 40 donkey farms are planned across Pakistan with an annual production target of 80,000 animals. The project will also include the establishment of a dedicated laboratory at the Agricultural University of Peshawar, which will focus on research and innovation in donkey breeding.
During the first three to five years, the focus will remain on controlled and structured breeding. After that, Pakistan will begin exporting donkey meat and bones to China. Officials have confirmed that exports will be strictly regulated, and local sales of donkey meat will not be allowed.
The demand for donkey products, particularly gelatin extracted from donkey hides (used in traditional Chinese medicine and cosmetics), has been rising rapidly in China. This project is expected to provide Pakistan with a new revenue stream while also creating job opportunities in rural areas.
Industry experts believe that this investment could turn Pakistan into a significant player in the global supply chain for donkey-based products. However, animal welfare advocates have urged authorities to ensure ethical breeding practices and proper veterinary care for the animals.
The Ministry of Food Security will closely monitor the project to ensure compliance with health and safety standards, as well as to safeguard local farming interests.
If the project meets its production goals, Pakistan could eventually export up to 10,000 donkeys per month to fulfill China’s growing demand.
