KATHMANDU (The COW News Digital)Devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy glacial surges across Nepal have destroyed multiple educational institutions and left over 200 students and teachers missing, official sources confirmed on Monday.
According to a situation report released by Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports, northern districts including Rasuwa and Nuwakot suffered the heaviest toll. Authorities confirmed that at least 19 schools across the three worst-affected districts were severely impacted, with nine completely swept away by violent floodwaters and seven others sustaining structural damage.
Emergency rescue teams reported that swift flood surges swept away approximately 20 students directly, while over 200 students remain unaccounted for after several school facilities were reduced to rubble. In some areas, heroic efforts by teachers saved hundreds of children moments before entire three-story school buildings collapsed into the raging Trishuli River.
The catastrophic flooding—triggered by an ice-rock avalanche along the Nepal-Tibet border—has destroyed vital roads and suspension bridges, leaving multiple mountainous communities isolated and hindering search operations. Humanitarian organizations and security forces have deployed personnel and helicopters to locate survivors, construct temporary learning centers, and reunite stranded children with their families.
