GAZA(The COW News Digital) Severe rainfall across the Gaza Strip has worsened the humanitarian crisis facing thousands of displaced Palestinian families, with approximately 70,000 tents reportedly affected by flooding during the first major rainfall of the winter season.

The heavy downpour has inundated temporary shelters established for families displaced by Israeli military operations, leaving many residents struggling to protect themselves from the cold and rising floodwaters. Personal belongings, including mattresses, blankets, clothing and essential household items, have been soaked, while several makeshift shelters have become unsuitable for living.

The latest rainfall has added another layer of hardship for Gaza’s already vulnerable population, many of whom have been living in temporary tent settlements after losing their homes. The affected communities include large numbers of children, women, elderly people and individuals with medical conditions, making the situation particularly concerning.

According to Gaza’s Civil Defence service, emergency teams received approximately 1,500 calls for assistance from residents within a period of just 10 hours after the rainfall began. The calls reportedly came from different locations across the territory, where floodwaters had entered shelters and threatened the safety of displaced families.

In some areas, water levels reportedly reached between 30 and 40 centimetres, creating difficulties for residents attempting to remain inside their tents or move to safer locations. Flooding has also disrupted living conditions in temporary settlements, where basic infrastructure and adequate drainage facilities remain limited.

The impact of the rainfall has been particularly severe for families living in fragile shelters constructed from materials that offer little protection against harsh winter weather. Many displaced residents have limited access to dry clothing, warm bedding and secure accommodation, increasing their exposure to cold temperatures and potential health risks.

Emergency responders have been working to assist affected residents and respond to requests for help. However, the widespread flooding and the large number of emergency calls highlight the scale of the challenge facing relief teams across Gaza.

The arrival of winter has raised concerns about the living conditions of displaced Palestinians, particularly those residing in overcrowded tent camps. Continued rainfall could further damage temporary shelters, destroy essential belongings and force additional families to seek alternative accommodation.

Humanitarian needs in Gaza remain extensive, with displaced households requiring emergency shelter, waterproof materials, blankets, clothing and other essential supplies to cope with the worsening weather conditions.

The latest developments underscore the vulnerability of families who have been forced to leave their homes and are now facing the additional threat of severe weather. For thousands of Palestinians living in temporary camps, the winter season has begun with flooding, damaged shelters and growing uncertainty over their ability to find safe and adequate accommodation.

The reported impact on tens of thousands of tents and the substantial volume of emergency calls demonstrate the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to protect displaced families as winter conditions intensify.
