Los Angeles (The COW News Digital) Indian-born politician Nithya Raman has emerged victorious in the Los Angeles mayoral election, defeating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a significant political development in the United States. Raman’s victory marks a major breakthrough for progressive politics and makes her the first South Asian and Asian American woman to lead the city.

Raman secured 52.1% of the vote, while Bass received 47.9%. The Associated Press projected Raman as the winner following the latest vote count, with the incumbent mayor conceding defeat on Thursday.

Bass reportedly contacted Raman to congratulate her on the victory and expressed her willingness to support a peaceful transition of power. The outcome represents a major setback for Bass, who had been seeking another term as the city’s leader.

Raman, 45, was born in India and moved to the United States at the age of six, according to reports. She entered Los Angeles politics in 2020, when she was elected to the City Council. Before entering public office, she worked as an urban planner and became involved in community initiatives focused on homelessness and neighbourhood development.

Her mayoral campaign received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America, the progressive political organisation that also supported New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Raman’s election victory has strengthened the organisation’s influence in major American cities.

The campaign focused heavily on housing affordability, homelessness, public safety and improving essential municipal services. Raman argued that Los Angeles needed a new approach to address its growing challenges, particularly the rising cost of housing and the increasing number of residents struggling to afford living in the city.

Her victory also reflects a broader political shift among progressive voters, particularly younger residents who have increasingly supported candidates advocating for economic reforms and expanded public services.

The mayoral race was closely contested, with Bass maintaining support among moderate voters and political establishment figures. However, Raman’s campaign gained momentum as additional ballots were counted, ultimately giving her a decisive lead.

US President Donald Trump also criticised the Los Angeles election results, describing the outcome as disappointing and raising questions about the electoral process. However, reports indicated that he did not provide evidence to support his allegations.

Raman’s victory comes amid a broader wave of Democratic electoral successes across the United States. Progressive candidates have gained increased attention in several major cities, highlighting changing political preferences among American voters.

Her election is being viewed as another milestone for South Asian representation in American politics, following Zohran Mamdani’s electoral success in New York.

As Los Angeles prepares for a new administration, Raman is expected to face significant challenges involving housing, homelessness, public safety and the delivery of city services.

Her administration’s ability to translate campaign promises into practical policies will be closely watched by residents, political observers and national leaders.

The election has also renewed discussions about the growing role of immigrant communities and minority representation in American political leadership.
