TEHRAN(The COW News digital) Iran has said a planned meeting between Tehran and Gulf countries in Oman was postponed at Saudi Arabia’s request, while denying any connection between the decision and the war in Yemen.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the postponement was requested by Saudi Arabia. Oman also confirmed that the meeting had been delayed, explaining that the move was intended to create a more suitable environment for reaching consensus among the participating countries.
The meeting was expected to address several regional issues, including developments surrounding the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, according to reports. Officials had been expected to discuss regional security, maritime developments and other matters affecting relations between Iran and Gulf states.
No new date has been announced for the meeting.
The postponement comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing international attention on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for global energy supplies. Any disruption in the waterway could have significant consequences for oil markets and international shipping.
Baghaei also rejected reports linking Iran directly to the war in Yemen. He said Tehran had no role in directing the decisions of Yemen’s Houthis, maintaining that the group makes its own decisions based on its interests.
The Iranian official’s comments came alongside Tehran’s response to separate reports concerning alleged activity at Pickaxe Mountain, also known as Kolang Kuh, in Iran.
Iranian authorities dismissed reports of new activity at the site as baseless. The issue had attracted attention after US President Donald Trump reportedly said that Washington was monitoring developments in the area and warned Iran to be cautious.
Pickaxe Mountain has become a focus of US concerns because of its reported links to Iran’s sensitive nuclear and military infrastructure. Trump has previously issued warnings about possible US action against locations associated with Iran’s strategic capabilities.
Iran has rejected the latest reports, with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson insisting that claims about new activity at the mountain were without basis.
The developments come as diplomatic efforts involving Iran, Oman and Gulf states face growing regional pressure. Oman has traditionally played a role in facilitating dialogue between countries with competing interests, making the postponement of the meeting potentially significant for ongoing regional diplomacy.
The planned discussions were seen as an opportunity for Gulf countries and Iran to address sensitive regional issues through direct engagement rather than confrontation.
