British (The COW News Digital) Iran and Russia are reportedly engaged in discussions over a potential agreement to supply Tehran with the advanced S-400 air defence system.
The report, citing a senior Iranian official, said Tehran remains hopeful that Russian President Vladimir Putin will eventually approve the delivery of the S-400 system, which Iran has been seeking for several years.
According to The Telegraph, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei dispatched security chief Mohsen Rezaei to Moscow on Thursday with a special letter outlining Tehran’s key request for the Russian-made long-range surface-to-air missile system.
The reported visit is being viewed as part of Iran’s efforts to strengthen its air defence capabilities amid growing regional security concerns.
The S-400 is an advanced Russian air defence system designed to intercept a range of aerial threats, including aircraft and missiles. Its potential acquisition could significantly enhance Iran’s ability to protect strategic locations and military infrastructure.
Iran has reportedly been pursuing the system for years, seeking to improve its defensive capabilities through closer military cooperation with Moscow.
However, the report did not confirm whether Russia has agreed to supply the system or whether a formal deal has been finalised.
The discussions reportedly extend beyond military cooperation, with Iran and Russia also exploring the construction of a new gas pipeline between the two countries.
The proposed pipeline could represent another area of cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, both of which have significant natural gas resources.
The Kremlin reportedly described Mohsen Rezaei’s visit as an effort to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran.
The reported talks highlight the continued development of strategic ties between the two countries, particularly in the areas of defence, energy and regional affairs.
Iran’s pursuit of the S-400 system comes as Tehran seeks to modernise its military capabilities and address concerns over airspace security.
The possible agreement could have implications for the regional security balance, although its potential impact would depend on the final terms of any arrangement and whether Russia proceeds with the delivery.
For now, the reported negotiations remain ongoing, and neither the supply of the S-400 system nor the gas pipeline project has been confirmed as a completed agreement.
