LONDON — Iranian state-linked hackers successfully shut down a UK power plant for four days last month, marking the first known cyberattack of its kind against British critical infrastructure, according to a report by The Telegraph.
British officials declined to identify the targeted facility due to security concerns, but confirmed that the plant remained completely non-operational for four days while engineers worked to restore systems. Reports indicate the facility was relatively small, ensuring the incident caused no broader disruptions to the national grid or power supply.
The cyberattack coincided with a series of targeted strikes against water utility infrastructure across 12 US states, which sparked widespread concern in Washington. Experts suggest the intrusion was intended to demonstrate that hackers affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) possess the capability to breach and disable sensitive infrastructure within Western nations.
Prior to this breach, cyber threats to critical supply chains had prompted security warnings, but no foreign threat actors had successfully forced an operational shutdown of a British power generation facility.
