National ( The cow news digital ) Despite the recent arrival of tomato shipments from Iran, retail consumers in Karachi continue to face severe financial strain as local tomato prices have skyrocketed to between Rs 450 and Rs 500 per kilogram.
According to local market reports, vendors across various neighborhoods in the metropolis are selling imported Iranian and Quetta tomatoes at inflated rates ranging from Rs 450 to Rs 500 per kg, or Rs 110 to Rs 125 per 250 grams. Even lower-quality produce has seen a steep price hike, with traders offering smaller, unripened tomatoes for as much as Rs 400 per kg.
“Despite the influx of imported tomatoes from Iran, consumers have received zero relief as retail prices continue to hit record highs across local markets,” media reports highlighted.
The sharp escalation in prices of the essential kitchen staple has severely impacted household budgets, sparking concern among residents. Market sources attribute the persistent surge to supply chain disruptions, rising transport costs, and inadequate local yield, leaving consumers at the mercy of unregulated retail pricing.
