WASHINGTON(The COW News Digital) The scope of a recent Cyclosporiasis outbreak—currently considered the largest known outbreak of the parasitic illness in the United States—has expanded, bringing the total number of affected states to nine.
According to updated figures from U.S. federal health agencies, cases were initially identified in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. The outbreak list now includes Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania following newly confirmed infections.
Epidemiological investigations indicate that the majority of cases are linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce imported from central Mexico, which tested positive for the microscopic parasite Cyclospora.
Health experts note that while Cyclosporiasis is generally not life-threatening, it causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including prolonged diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, nausea, and persistent fatigue.
Sources familiar with the ongoing probe report that patients in the newly affected states became ill around the same timeframe as initial cases, suggesting a shared link to the same contaminated shipment of lettuce.
Public health officials advise individuals exhibiting symptoms after consuming potentially affected produce to seek medical evaluation promptly, as investigations into the distribution chain remain ongoing.
