WASHINGTON — US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States is initiating an “economic D-Day” campaign against Iran, marking what he described as the largest coordinated financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary.

In a public statement, Bessent stated that the confrontation with Tehran is entering its “endgame” following US military operations that targeted Iranian military production facilities and nuclear infrastructure. He explained that the new measures aim to systematically sever all financial, commercial, and energy lifelines maintaining the Iranian economy.

The Treasury Secretary warned third-party nations and international institutions against maintaining trade or financial connections with Tehran, emphasizing that entities facilitating economic activity with Iran risk secondary sanctions and exclusion from global financial markets. He specifically called on major buyers of Iranian energy to halt transactions or face economic consequences.

In response to the US announcement, Iranian officials rejected the validity of the sanctions, describing the campaign as a continuation of failed economic warfare. Iranian leadership reiterated warnings that continued economic pressure could prompt countermeasures affecting regional energy shipping, including potential disruptions to oil transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
