ISLAMABAD: Medical experts have issued a stern warning to individuals who smoke or vape, cautioning that these habits significantly elevate the risk of contracting pneumococcal pneumonia—a severe lung infection caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria.

While traditional tobacco use and electronic cigarettes are widely associated with lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases, health specialists emphasize their role in compromising respiratory defense mechanisms. Pneumococcal pneumonia causes severe inflammation and fluid accumulation in the lung’s air sacs. In acute cases, the bacteria can breach the bloodstream or invade the protective membranes surrounding the brain, leading to life-threatening complications.

Explaining the underlying biological mechanism, experts highlight that the respiratory tract relies on microscopic, hair-like structures called cilia to clear mucus, pathogens, and debris from the lungs. Chronic exposure to cigarette smoke and vaping aerosols paralyzes and damages these cilia while causing persistent airway inflammation. Consequently, the lungs lose their natural capability to filter out harmful bacteria efficiently.

Individuals with pre-existing chronic conditions—such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, and heart disease—face an exponentially higher risk of severe illness when combined with smoking or vaping.

Medical professionals advise the public not to ignore sudden symptoms, which include high fever, chills, a productive cough with phlegm, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Immediate emergency medical care is required if individuals experience cyanosis (bluish tint on lips or fingers), confusion, or persistent respiratory distress.

Health authorities stress that quitting smoking and vaping immediately reduces ongoing airway irritation, allowing the lungs to gradually repair their natural defenses. Along with maintaining strict hand hygiene and managing underlying health conditions, doctors recommend discussing pneumococcal vaccination with healthcare providers to build effective immunity against severe complications.
