Islamabad(The COW News Digital)The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has announced that all universities across the country, both public and private, will now require undergraduate and postgraduate students to complete a dedicated course in artificial intelligence (AI). The three-credit course will be implemented starting with the 2026 academic session and will be incorporated into every degree program.
Dr. Zia-ul-Haq, Executive Director of HEC, issued an official directive to all vice-chancellors and directors of degree-awarding institutions emphasizing the critical role of AI in the 21st century. The letter highlighted that AI is rapidly emerging as a transformative force across education, healthcare, the economy, and administrative sectors, fostering innovation and efficiency.
HEC’s announcement stressed that the importance of AI cannot be ignored, noting that countries worldwide are integrating AI technologies to shape their future. In line with this global trend, Pakistan’s higher education system aims to equip students with skills to responsibly and ethically harness AI, preparing them for the evolving professional landscape.

Universities have been instructed to integrate the AI course into their curricula either as a standalone mandatory subject, as an interdisciplinary course, or embedded within relevant program modules. While universities have flexibility in how they deliver the course, the curriculum must cover fundamental AI concepts, ensuring that students gain a strong foundational understanding of the technology.
This initiative reflects Pakistan’s commitment to keeping pace with global educational and technological advancements. By introducing AI education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, HEC seeks to create a generation of graduates capable of contributing to research, innovation, and the application of AI across multiple sectors.
The mandatory course is expected to provide students with critical knowledge in areas such as machine learning, data analysis, and ethical AI practices. Universities will also be encouraged to provide practical, project-based learning opportunities to allow students to engage directly with AI tools and applications.
HEC officials noted that the new course structure will be rolled out nationwide in all degree programs starting from the 2026 academic session, making Pakistan one of the first countries in the region to mandate AI education across higher education institutions. The policy underscores the HEC’s focus on aligning education with emerging technological trends and preparing students for a digitally driven future.
