ISLAMABAD( The COW News Digital) Pakistan is set to witness a significant improvement in its internet infrastructure, as three new submarine cables are scheduled to connect the country with the global network within the next 12 to 18 months. The development was confirmed by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication during a session of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT.

Officials informed the committee that agreements for all three submarine cables have already been finalized, marking a major step toward reducing reliance on the country’s currently limited internet routes. The ministry stated that these new cables will directly connect Pakistan to Europe, allowing for a more robust and diverse international connectivity network.

According to IT Secretary Zarar Hashim Khan, the project will significantly increase bandwidth capacity, ensuring faster, more reliable, and more secure internet services for users across the country. “These new submarine cables will not only improve internet speed but will also make the overall digital ecosystem more resilient and capable of supporting future technological growth,” Khan said.

The ministry emphasized that the move will greatly strengthen Pakistan’s internet infrastructure, enhancing the quality of online services and providing businesses, educational institutions, and ordinary users with improved connectivity. By expanding direct global links, the country is expected to experience fewer disruptions and reduced downtime in the event of cable damage or outages on existing routes.

Committee member Sadiq Memon raised concerns about the recent internet slowdowns and service issues experienced by millions of users. Responding to these concerns, ministry officials assured the committee that the upcoming submarine cables will address such problems in the long run, offering a sustainable solution for Pakistan’s growing digital demands.

Industry experts say this development could have a wide-ranging impact on Pakistan’s economy, supporting the growth of e-commerce, online education, remote work, and the tech sector. With a more stable and faster internet, Pakistan could also attract more foreign investment in IT-enabled services and outsourcing businesses.

The project is being hailed as a crucial step toward achieving the government’s vision of a “Digital Pakistan” and ensuring that the country keeps pace with the global digital economy.
