NEW YORK ( The COW News DIgital) Pakistan has called on the United Nations to ease sanctions on Syria to support the country’s political transition, economic recovery, and reconstruction after more than a decade of devastating civil conflict.
Speaking at a session of the 15-member UN Security Council, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Usman Jadoon, emphasized the need to create conditions that would allow peace and stability to take root in the war-torn nation.
He urged the international community to consider the humanitarian and economic consequences of prolonged sanctions, arguing that the easing of restrictions could help facilitate reconstruction and reintegration efforts. “We underscore the importance of relaxing sanctions on Syria to enable economic recovery, reconstruction, and reintegration,” Jadoon said.
The Pakistani envoy stressed the importance of improving governance in Syria to ensure meaningful progress toward national reconciliation. Referring to the recent elections of the Syrian People’s Assembly, Jadoon described the polls as a “positive step” toward strengthening political institutions and advancing the democratic process.
He expressed hope that elections would soon be held in those areas where security conditions had previously delayed voting, ensuring full political inclusion across the country.
Jadoon also welcomed the recent agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — a coalition of Kurdish militias and allied groups — and the central government in Damascus, which allows for the integration of SDF units into the national army. The envoy called it “an important development that could help unify Syria’s military structure and improve internal stability.”
Highlighting the need to expand the central government’s authority throughout the nation, including regions such as Sweida, Aleppo, and Deir Ezzor, Jadoon said restoring law and order across all territories was essential for lasting peace.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Syria, the ambassador reiterated that Pakistan supports a “Syrian-led and Syrian-owned” political process that upholds the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the country.
“Through national efforts and the indispensable support of the international community, Syria can emerge as a strong, peaceful, and prosperous state,” Jadoon concluded.
Pakistan’s appeal underscores growing international calls to balance humanitarian needs with political considerations as Syria continues to rebuild from the ruins of a 14-year civil war.
