ISLAMABAD (The COW News Digital ) The Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights has taken serious notice of the PIMS tragedy, directing authorities to initiate action against all individuals found responsible, including the former Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
During a meeting of the committee, members called for the names of the former PIMS executive director and other responsible officials to be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL). The committee also directed the relevant authorities to register First Information Reports (FIRs) against those allegedly involved in the incident without delay.
The committee further ordered that the assets of the accused be attached in connection with the cases, stressing the need for accountability and legal proceedings against those found responsible.
The development came during a tense session of the Senate Human Rights Committee, where discussions surrounding the PIMS tragedy became heated. Senator Aimal Wali Khan and Senator Abid Sher Ali exchanged sharp remarks during the proceedings.
The disagreement reportedly began when Aimal Wali raised questions during the committee meeting. Abid Sher Ali responded by asking him to put his questions forward in his capacity as a committee member.
Aimal Wali then questioned Abid Sher Ali’s authority, asking, “Who are you?”
The exchange created tension in the meeting as members attempted to bring the situation under control. Senator Qurat-ul-Ain Marri intervened and urged both senators to remain calm.
The verbal confrontation continued briefly, with Abid Sher Ali telling Aimal Wali that he was not a police station house officer (SHO).
Despite the heated exchange, the committee proceeded with its discussion on the PIMS tragedy and issued directions concerning legal action against those allegedly responsible.
The committee’s decision to seek placement of names on the ECL, registration of FIRs and attachment of assets signals a tougher approach toward accountability in the matter.
The latest directives are expected to put pressure on the relevant authorities to move forward with investigations and determine responsibility through due legal process.
The Senate committee’s action comes amid growing demands for transparency and accountability over the incident, with the authorities now expected to implement the directions and submit progress before the concerned forum.
