Islamabad (The COW News Digital)  The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have ended their deadlock over cooperation on legislation, with the PPP agreeing to support legislation considered to be in the national interest.

The development follows talks between the government and the PPP over legislative matters. Earlier, the PPP had declined to give a blanket assurance of support for government bills and sought advance information and consultation on proposed legislation.

Under the reported understanding, the PPP will cooperate with the government during upcoming sessions of Parliament, while retaining the right to review individual bills before deciding its position.

The two sides have also discussed legislation linked to conditions associated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Earlier consultations between the PML-N and PPP focused on several proposed bills, including amendments concerning government-owned entities and maritime affairs.

According to reports, the parties have also agreed to establish a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms. The committee is expected to include representation from parliamentary parties, with the PPP proposed to receive the chairmanship.

The agreement is aimed at improving coordination between the coalition partners and facilitating the passage of pending legislation in the National Assembly and Senate.

The latest understanding comes after earlier differences over the government’s proposed legislative agenda. The PPP had sought assurances that it would be taken into confidence before bills were introduced and that draft legislation would be shared for consultation.

The National Assembly’s official records show that a number of legislative measures have been processed by parliamentary committees during 2026, including bills relating to maritime affairs, commerce, insurance and other sectors.

The PML-N and PPP have remained coalition partners and have previously reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining coordination and political stability.

While the reported agreement could facilitate the government’s legislative agenda, the final position of the PPP on individual bills will depend on the contents of each proposed law and the party’s consultations.
