World ( The cow news digital ) The ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 is set to feature an expanded format with 14 teams, a significant increase compared to the previous two editions. Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured direct qualification based on their hosting rights.
According to the qualification criteria, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of September 30 will join the two host nations to claim direct entries into the tournament. Afghanistan’s thrilling victory against Ireland in Belfast has virtually guaranteed them a spot in the top eight.
Consequently, defending champions Australia, alongside India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, are among the teams securing direct qualification, alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.
On the other hand, two-time former world champions West Indies, currently placed 10th in the rankings, face a challenging path. Although they still have two upcoming ODI matches against India before the cutoff date, even winning both encounters will not be enough for them to break into the top eight. As a result, the West Indies will now have to compete in the World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for February 2027 to secure their place in the tournament.
The qualification pathway for associate and lower-ranked teams involves multiple stages. In the Challenge League, 12 teams divided into two groups will compete, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Qualifier Play-off. Meanwhile, the top four teams from the eight-team Cricket World Cup League 2 will earn direct spots in the main World Cup Qualifier.
The 10-team ICC World Cup Qualifier is scheduled to take place from February 22 to March 23, 2027, where the final four remaining slots for the global event will be decided.
