ISLAMABAD — Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has publicly opposed any proposal to transfer Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to a private medical facility for treatment. Speaking during an interview with Geo News, the minister argued that allowing a high-profile inmate to be moved to a private establishment sets an unsustainable precedent within the national penal system.
Addressing the issue, Khawaja Asif emphasized that administrative decisions regarding incarcerated political figures must adhere strictly to established protocols. He noted that other political leaders, including former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, received medical evaluation and care exclusively within state-run public hospitals during their respective detentions. Allowing special accommodations, he warned, would prompt similar demands from standard inmates across the country.
The Defence Minister also referenced past incidents to highlight security concerns during medical care, pointing to an instance where an individual was allegedly caught attempting to film a political leader’s surgical procedure without authorization.
Furthermore, Asif signaled that the government intends to formally submit its stance through legal channels if permissible under current judicial proceedings, emphasizing that standard procedures should be applied uniformly regardless of political status.
