London( The COW News Digital)Britain’s Prince Andrew has officially announced that he is relinquishing his royal title of “Duke of York”, a move that marks another significant step back from public life for the embattled royal.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Prince Andrew said he would no longer use any honorary titles or royal designations, adding that the decision was made in consultation with King Charles III.

“I have decided to step away from all royal titles and honors, including the title of Duke of York, which was graciously bestowed upon me by my late mother, Queen Elizabeth II,” Prince Andrew said. “I will continue to be known simply as Prince Andrew, but will not use any formal royal styles or privileges.”

The announcement comes amid continued scrutiny and public criticism over Andrew’s past association with the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes. Prince Andrew has consistently and strongly denied all allegations of wrongdoing but has faced immense reputational damage and isolation from official royal duties in recent years.

According to British media reports, Andrew’s former wife, Sarah Ferguson, will also cease using any royal titles, although their daughters — Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie — will retain their official royal designations.

The Duke of York title was originally granted to Prince Andrew in 1986 upon his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. It has historically been one of the most prestigious titles in the British monarchy, traditionally reserved for senior male members of the royal family.

Royal watchers say the decision underscores the monarchy’s ongoing effort to protect its public image under King Charles III’s reign, which has focused on a “slimmer and more accountable” royal family.

A senior royal correspondent for The Times noted, “This move effectively closes a chapter in the modern history of the British monarchy. It reflects both public sentiment and the King’s desire to distance the institution from past controversies.”

Despite the relinquishment of his titles, Prince Andrew will continue to live at the Royal Lodge in Windsor and maintain a private role within the family, though without any official royal responsibilities.
