Lahore ( The COW News Digital) Devastating floods in Punjab have claimed 46 lives and affected over 3.5 million people, according to the Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia. The floods have wreaked havoc across the province, submerging thousands of villages and displacing tens of thousands of residents.

PDMA reports indicate that 3,944 villages have been affected, with relief camps currently housing 25,000 to 30,000 people. Rescue operations are ongoing, with over 1.49 million individuals evacuated from high-risk areas. Additionally, more than 1 million livestock have been relocated to safe zones to prevent losses.

The situation along the Ravi River has become particularly critical. At the Sadhnai point, floodwaters are returning instead of flowing into the Chenab River due to high water levels downstream. Authorities have warned that until the water in the Chenab recedes, the Ravi River will continue to backflow, exacerbating the flooding situation in nearby areas.

The Flood Forecasting Division reported extreme water levels at several key locations. At Bhaloki, the flood is severe, with water inflow and outflow recorded at 114,130 cubic feet per second (cusecs). The Sadhnai area is witnessing an even higher flood level, with inflow at 160,580 cusecs and outflow at 157,580 cusecs. Meanwhile, Jasr is experiencing moderate flooding, with water inflow and outflow measured at 85,980 cusecs.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents in low-lying and high-risk areas to follow evacuation orders. Emergency services, including boats and medical teams, have been deployed to provide immediate relief and assistance to affected communities.

PDMA emphasizes the urgency of the situation, noting that ongoing heavy rains and overflowing rivers could further increase casualties and property damage. Relief efforts are being coordinated with provincial and federal agencies to ensure timely support for displaced families.

The floods have disrupted transportation, submerged farmlands, and damaged critical infrastructure, leaving thousands dependent on government aid. Officials are calling for public cooperation and caution as rescue operations continue.

The provincial government has assured that all efforts are being made to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to affected populations and prevent further loss of life.
