Islamabad( The COW News Digital)The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rainfall in several parts of the country today, with moderate showers expected in various regions and flood alerts issued for areas along the Chenab River.
According to the PMD, rainfall is likely in Islamabad, parts of Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and select areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The weather in Karachi and other coastal parts of Sindh is expected to remain partly cloudy, with light rain or drizzle anticipated in some localities.
The current wet conditions are a continuation of the ongoing monsoon system, which is set to intensify with the arrival of the seventh spell starting August 13. Weather experts have cautioned that this new phase may bring heavier rains in certain regions, potentially increasing the risk of urban flooding.
In addition to the rain forecast, authorities have issued flood warnings for several locations along the Chenab River. The Flood Forecasting Division in Lahore reported that water release from an Indian dam, coupled with ongoing rains, is likely to cause medium to high flood levels at the Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad barrages.
Officials have also warned that the Chenab and its adjoining tributaries could see a surge in water flow within the next 12 hours, raising the potential for inundation in low-lying areas. Communities near riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Provincial disaster management authorities have been placed on high alert to deal with possible emergencies, with rescue teams and equipment on standby in vulnerable districts. Local administrations have been instructed to monitor water levels closely and ensure that early warning messages reach at-risk populations in a timely manner.
The PMD has urged citizens to stay updated on weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall, and refrain from crossing flooded roads or streams. Fishermen along Sindh and Balochistan’s coastal belts have also been advised to exercise caution over the coming days due to possible rough sea conditions.
With the monsoon season approaching its peak, meteorologists emphasize that the combined effects of upstream water releases and regional downpours could strain the country’s flood management systems. Authorities continue to coordinate efforts to minimize potential damage and safeguard lives as the weather system unfolds.
