Spanish Sports Minister Pilar Alegría emphasized that Israel should face sanctions in the sporting arena to hold it accountable for what she described as “genocide” in Gaza. “It is difficult to explain the double standards of exempting Israel while Russian teams faced severe restrictions after the Ukraine invasion,” Alegría said.
The minister noted that Russian national teams were barred from participating in international competitions following the Ukraine conflict. National anthems were not played, and flags not displayed. Even if individual Russian athletes competed, they did so without representing their country officially. Spain now urges the international sporting community to adopt similar measures for Israel.
Alegría highlighted the deteriorating situation in Gaza, describing the humanitarian crisis as increasingly dire. She stressed that international sports organizations and committees should act consistently, following the precedent set in 2022 with Russia.
The statement coincides with recent protests in Spain against the participation of Israeli teams in the cycling Grand Tour, Vuelta a España. Demonstrators demanded that Israel be held accountable for its military actions in Gaza, and called for global sporting bodies to follow suit in suspending Israeli representation at international events.
Spain’s government has previously classified Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide and has already implemented various sanctions. Officials argue that allowing Israeli teams to compete internationally undermines accountability and sends the wrong message amid widespread civilian suffering.
