Spain secured a record fourth European Championship title with a 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal four minutes from time, capping a dominant campaign for Spain.
England fought back from a goal down for the fourth successive match, but ultimately suffered their second straight final defeat. Spain’s victory was deserved, with the team enjoying 65% possession in the first half and creating several chances.
The win marks Spain’s fourth Euro title, following previous victories in 1964, 2008, and 2012. Coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team, saying, “I couldn’t be happier. A real team, European champions. I said I was proud, and today I am even prouder. It confirms what we are. For me, they are the best in the world.”
For England, the defeat extends their wait for a major tournament title, with their last victory coming in the 1966 World Cup. Coach Gareth Southgate said, “We’ve competed until the very end of the final… The players have got to take enormous credit for getting us to the point they did.”
