The research was conducted collaboratively by Carnegie Mellon University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Oxford, and the University of California. It examined how individuals performed on problem-solving tasks with and without access to AI assistance.

In the study, participants were asked to complete a series of tasks designed to test reasoning and analytical skills. One group was allowed to use an AI assistant for support, while the other group worked without any digital help. Researchers later removed AI access and observed how participants performed independently.

According to the findings, individuals who relied on AI assistance for as little as 10 minutes showed a noticeable decline in independent problem-solving ability when the tool was no longer available. Some participants struggled to complete tasks on their own, while others gave up more quickly or produced incorrect answers.

Researchers suggested that the issue may not lie in the use of AI itself, but in how dependency develops even over a short period. When users become accustomed to immediate answers, their ability to think through problems independently may weaken temporarily.

However, the study emphasized that the findings should not be interpreted as a call to ban AI tools in educational or professional settings. Instead, researchers highlighted the importance of using AI in a balanced way that supports learning rather than replacing cognitive effort.

They also recommended redesigning AI systems to function more like tutors or guides, encouraging users to think critically rather than simply providing direct answers. According to the researchers, such an approach could help maintain cognitive engagement while still benefiting from AI assistance.

The study further noted that using AI for explanations or clarification did not show the same level of negative impact, suggesting that the type of interaction matters significantly.

Experts involved in the research warned that problem-solving skills are essential for learning and intellectual development. Over-reliance on AI tools, even briefly, may reduce mental engagement if users stop attempting to solve problems independently.

The findings add to growing global discussions about the long-term impact of artificial intelligence on education, workplace productivity, and human cognition as AI tools become increasingly integrated into daily life.
