According to Bangladeshi media reports, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) of its decision not to send the national team to India. The board has requested that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be shifted to Sri Lanka as an alternative venue.
BCB officials believe that the current political climate and security situation make it unsafe for the national team to travel to India. Media reports indicate that the Bangladeshi government advised the cricket board to take up the matter officially with the ICC, emphasizing that player safety must remain the top priority.
Bangladesh’s Adviser for Sports, Asif Nazrul, expressed concern over the prevailing security environment and said the protection of players and team officials is a shared responsibility of both the government and the cricket board. He stressed that no compromise would be made on the safety of athletes representing the country at the international level.
The issue has already sparked reactions within cricketing circles. Reports suggesting that Bangladesh’s matches could be moved out of India prompted a response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), although details of its position remain limited. Indian cricket authorities are expected to hold discussions with the ICC to address the situation.
The president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board said an emergency meeting of the board would be convened soon to review the situation in detail and decide on the future course of action. He added that Bangladesh remains committed to participating in the T20 World Cup, provided acceptable security guarantees and venue arrangements are ensured.
So far, the ICC has not issued an official statement on Bangladesh’s refusal or its request to relocate matches. However, sources suggest that the governing body is monitoring the situation closely, as any change in venues could affect tournament scheduling, logistics, and broadcasting arrangements.
The development comes at a time when cricket has increasingly been impacted by political and security considerations, particularly in South Asia. Analysts warn that unresolved issues could set a precedent for future tournaments, where teams may demand neutral venues due to regional tensions.
As the countdown to the T20 World Cup continues, all eyes will be on the ICC’s response and whether a compromise can be reached to ensure both player safety and the smooth conduct of the tournament.
